How long does the procedure take?
For tattoo removals, big and small, a professional recommends 8 to 13 sessions. In some instances, some tattoos can be removed in as little as 4 sessions. This depends on several factors, including the ink color, how pigmented the colors are, the scar tissue surrounding the tattoo, and where the tattoo is located on the body.
Does the procedure hurt?
The procedure is known to be uncomfortable. Some patients may say the pain is excruciating, others have said that the procedure is comparable to getting a tattoo done. Most people who have gotten it done describe it as a rubber band snapping against the skin or the sting of hot grease when cooking.
Will there be scarring after the procedure is done?
If the tattoo has noticeable scarring before the procedure, it is important for patients to understand that these scars will remain even after the procedure. Although, in normal protocols and with the proper aftercare, there is very little scarring that is left. The ink from scarring due to the tattoo can be removed, but the scar will most likely be present, nonetheless.
What are the side effects like?
Side effects are expected for most patients. Some of the most common side effects include:
- Redness
- Tenderness
- Swelling
- Scabs
- Blisters
- Hyper- and hypopigmentation
All of these side effects are temporary. Redness, tenderness, and swelling typically subside within a day or two after the treatment. Scabs, bruising, and blisters can take several days to completely heal.
How active can I be after the procedure?
Because laser tattoo removal almost always causes some swelling and tenderness, patients will have to pause on heavy physical activity. For smaller tattoo removals, it is recommended to avoid exercising for a day or two. For larger tattoo removals, a patient may be recommended to avoid exercising anywhere from 4 to 5 days after the procedure.
Are some colors harder to remove than others?
Yes, it can be harder to remove certain colors more than others. Some of the most difficult colors to remove are reds, oranges, and yellows. This is because these colors blend more with the skin and closely resemble natural skin colors. Although, with the right technology and a professional laser removal team, inks of all kinds can be successfully removed.
Do you need numbing cream for the removal?
Numbing creams and injectable agents have proven themselves to be ineffective when it comes to pain reduction during these procedures. A professional may offer other methods of numbing that they have in-house while they perform the treatment. It is guaranteed that a professional can help with pain reduction and make the process much more tolerable.
Does the procedure always work?
Laser tattoo removal always works, but yes, in some cases, it can work better than in others. This is because tattoo artists use different ink, therefore the procedure may be more effective on some tattoos. Just because a tattoo may be more difficult to remove does not necessarily mean the procedure will fail. This just requires more sessions to get the ink off.
Does the procedure work for dark skin?
Modern-day lasers are made to work on all skin types and skin tones. Dark or light pigmentations can all be treated safely and effectively in laser tattoo removal. Here at our medical spa, we use lasers that are designed to bypass the surface of the skin and target the pigment in the tattoo.
Will I have to keep the treated area from sun exposure?
After you have completed each session, the skin does require time to heal. During the next couple of weeks, while you are getting sessions done, you need to protect the skin from any exposure to the sun and/or extreme heat. A professional can provide you with more information on how to care for your skin, post-procedure.
